    The Pro Bono Committee will be accepting nominations from Jan 2, 2020 -February 24, 2020 for recipients of the annual Pro Bono Awards.  Completed applications should be sent to Tori Simmons via  tori.simmons@hwhlaw.com no later than February 24, 2020.

    The awards ceremony will be held on April 16, 2020 at 5 p.m. at the Chester Ferguson Law Center. 

    Please note: Pursuant to Florida Bar Rule 4-6.1 - Pro bono legal service" means legal service rendered to poor clients without charge or expectation of a fee for the lawyer at the time the service commences. Legal services written off as bad debts do not qualify as pro bono service. Pro bono legal service to the poor can also be provided through legal services to charitable, religious, or educational organizations whose overall mission and activities are designed predominately to address the needs of the poor.

    The FL Bar President's Pro Bono Service Awards Committee for the 13th Circuit, chaired by Carter Andersen, selected Jenay Iurato as the FL Bar President's Pro Bono Service Award recipient for the 13th Circuit. The FL Bar President's Pro Bono Service Award is awarded to one outstanding attorney from each of the 20 Circuits and one out of state FL Bar attorney in recognition of their significant legal services to the poor.

    The Tampa Hispanic Bar Association (THBA) nominated Ms. Iurato for this award to recognize her for her significant pro bono work done on behalf of human trafficking survivors. Ms. Iurato provided more than 350 pro bono hours in 2018 and over 270 pro bono hours in 2019, assisting human trafficking survivors with expungement of their criminal records and other legal services. Ms. Iurato has devoted her efforts over the last 6 years raising awareness of human trafficking and its impact in our local community and the state. During the last two years, Ms. Iurato has provided over 250 hours as a trainer about human trafficking, as a legislative advocate and as a guest speaker on various panels about human trafficking. Ms. Iurato, a co-managing member with her husband at the Iurato Law Firm, PL, is a past president of the THBA and currently serves on the inaugural THBA Foundation Board of Directors. The FL Bar President's Pro Bono Service Awards will be presented at the Florida Supreme Court on January 30, 2020.

    Congratulations to Vivian Cortes Hodz, former THBA President, who was selected from over 250 nominations submitted to Latino Leaders Magazine, as one of the top 60 Latino Lawyers in the country! More than 600 lawyers and law firms were researched. Vivian is a partner and co-founder of Cortes Hodz Family Law and Mediation, P.A. Latino Leaders Magazine will be publishing its list of 2019 Top Latino Lawyers in its Winter 2019 edition.

    For the fifth consecutive year, Latino Leaders magazine is publishing on its Winter 2019 edition the Top Latino Lawyers in The Country. This year we would like to CONGRATULATE our very own treasurer of the THBA, Bart Valdes, on being apart of the selected 60 Latino Lawyers in the USA! Latino Leaders Magazine will be publishing its list of 2019 Top Latino Lawyers in its Winter 2019 edition.

    Article in this week's La Gaceta on THBA supporter and Tampa Bay Bucs Latino Outreach Coordinator Eddie Mendez. Eddie, a proud Spanish-Cuban son of West Tampa, is a Jesuit graduate and proud Marine who, the day after 9-11-1, signed up to become a Marine and seek justice for his fallen brothers and sisters from the terrorist attacks.
